New Music Video: Mumford and Sons – “Whispers In The Dark”

Babelcoverart

“Whispers In The Dark” is the latest single from Mumford and Sons, the third from their Grammy Award winning album, Babel.

With every subsequent listen, I find myself loving Mumford and Sons and their latest album Babel a little bit more. Initially, I was slightly underwhelmed, but only because Babel sounds very similar to Sigh No More, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I wanted a bit more. Musically, Babel is an extension of the sound they defined in Sigh No More, and only after several months of listening to the album am I able to differentiate and appreciate individual songs.

Other standout tracks for me including “Lover of the Light”, “Hopeless Wanderer”, and my favorite songs on the album are “Broken Crown”, and “Below My Feet”.  I also really enjoy the bonus tracks, “For Those Below” and their cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic, “The Boxer”.

New Music Video: Dido – “No Freedom”

When it comes to soothing, subtle yet powerful pop songs, there’s none better than Dido.

Dido’s fourth studio album, Girl Who Got Away, was released earlier this month in Europe and will be released in the US on the 26th of March. It’s been nearly five years since her last album.

Dido’s bestselling debut album, No Angel, was released in 1999. Since then, the music industry has changed, but Dido has stayed true to her craft and style. You wont find any glitz, glamour, or shenanigans on her record.

Just a beautiful voice, great melodies, and emotionally charged pop songs. On the surface, the production and sound can seem simple, but it’s quite complex and layered. There are elements of electronic music, which Dido and her brother Rollo are known to incorporate in their production. It’s subtle and far from the pervasive EDM sound that is permeating the airwaves and pop music.

There is also subtle darkness in the lyrics that is beautifully juxtaposed with her angelic singing. This dynamic is further explored in the collaboration of Dido and Kendrick Lamar on “Let Us Move On”. I actually prefer the version with Kendrick Lamar over the Dido only version.

I’m a fan of these two songs and eagerly waiting for Girl Who Got Away to be released in the US on the 26th of March.  Hopefully she’ll tour with this album as she’s been an artist I’ve always wanted to see. Fingers crossed.

New Music Video: Grizzly Bear – “Gun-Shy”

Grizzly Bear just released a music video for their song, “Gun-Shy” from their latest album, Shields. And it’s one of the most captivating videos I’ve seen in a while…. it’s quite interesting.

It’s also equally disturbing and just plain gross in some parts. But I was very captivated.

Parts of it felt like they should be on the discoverty channel or some medical show. I was equally repulsed and physically weary, and also intrigued and captivated. It was odd, but I like it.
