I really love the movie Once, and the music from Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season.
I was beyond excited when I heard that they were adapting a stage production of the movie, and apparently I wasn’t the only one as it’s been a massive hit on Broadway. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2012, and won 8, including Best Musical and Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical for Steve Kazee.
I’ve yet to see the show or make it out to New York, but it’s on the top of my list of things to do in NYC.
In the meantime, the soundtrack for the musical has been a constant on my iPod. It’s nominated for a Grammy this year – hopefully it’ll win as it’s fantastic.
“The Moon”, is my favorite song from the album, and is the most played song in my iTunes at the moment. I won’t tell you how many plays it has, but suffice it to say that I’ve had it on repeat for days on end. It’s a beautiful, yet dark and tragic song. It’s moving, depressing, and emotional. It doesn’t sound like a song I’d have on repeat, but it’s just stunning.
And of course, there’s the winner of Best Original Song from the 2008 Academy Awards, “Falling Slowly”, as performed by the musical’s two leads, Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti.
And here’s a “making of” featurette:
Oh man, I really need to get to New York to see “Once”.
